The name 'Saijo' translates to "the very best one". It is astringent, medium-sized (3" long) and egg-shaped, with incredible rich flavor. Very cold hardy, ripens in Mid-Sept to Mid-October. When you harvest it, you can pluck off the cap and eat out the flesh from the open end. Very prolific bearer. Popular variety for deer and wildlife. The original tree in Japan is over 600 years old. It was a favorite of Dr. Dunstan and is called the very best for a reason!
